More About Our Broccoli

  • Broccoli is sometimes known by it's Italian name - Calabrese.
  • It's been grown for over 2000 years and believe it or not it was the Romans favourites vegetable. It was first introduced to Europe in the 1500's and first appeared in the UK in the 1720's.
  • The head, stalk and leaves are all edible.
  • Broccoli can be eaten raw or cooked and can be used in anything from stir fries to smoothies. The stalk and leaves are great added to soups.
  • Purple Sprouting Broccoli (PSB) is the colourful and vibrant cousin to Broccoli. It is leafier and deeper in colour than Calabrese and can be cooked in the same way as Broccoli or Asparagus. Try it dipped like 'soldiers' in soft boiled eggs or stir fried.
  • Mr Tom Landers (AKA 'Mr Broccoli') holds the world record for eating a pound of Broccoli in just 92 seconds.
  • Broccoli is a great source of Vitamin C and folate (naturally occurring folic acid). It also contains Vitamin A, K, Calcium and fibre.
